Coarse Fishing Tackle – Stalking Bream and Chub in UK Waterways
Coarse fishing is a popular variant of angling that’s found throughout the UK. Since such a variety of fish species are considered “coarse,” fishermen need to be aware of the habits of the type of fish they’re seeking and match their fishing tackle for that reason. Here’s some general information about how to fine-tune your coarse fishing tackle based on the kind of fish.
Coarse Fishing – A Summary
In an earlier era of our nation’s past, only the gentry would try to catch fish for sporting purposes. In addition, the freshwater fish species they preferred were salmon and trout exclusively. These “noble” fishermen found other species of fish inferior. Thus, such fish were termed “coarse”. Two popular coarse fishing species include bream and chub.
Bream
Bream are bottom feeders found in Lakes, slow moving rivers, and canals. Bream are shoal fish by nature, so the presence of one is a good indicator there’s more nearby. For a worthwhile fishing expedition, choose a fishing rod in the range of 9 to 13 feet. Attach a fixed spool fishing reel to the fishing line along with a 3-6 lb. test line. The size of the hook depends on the bait you choose. Hooks numbered 10-16 need to be reserved for maggots and worms, meanwhile number 6-10 hooks are great for bread and large lobs (earthworms). Additional bait consist of things like sweetcorn and brandlings. Brandlings are a derivative of the earthworm found in decomposing, organic substances such as manure. Bream can live approximately two decades and weigh nearly seven pounds (though the nation’s record is roughly 16.5 lbs).
Chub
Dace and chub look alike, except the chub’s anal fin is convex. This kind of fish can be found in running water and normally favours spots with existing overhanging trees. Chub also like lakes and ponds. Implement fixed spool fishing reels accompanied with fishing rods 9-11 ft. in length. The line strength needs to be 3-5 lbs. Preferred hooks are numbered six to sixteen. Bait includes maggots, strong cheese, luncheon meat, bread, casters and plugs. Casters are the chrysalis stage of the maggot and plugs are artificial lure that resemble a fish and tremble when pulled through the water. Chub live 10-12 years and the record in Britain is just under nine pounds. A normal weight for this kind of fish is roughly 5 pounds.
Each time a UK angler matches his coarse fishing tackle to the species desired, the odds get much better.
